Concrete Steps, Columns, and Special Shapes: Estimation Guide

Not every concrete project is a simple rectangle. Steps, stairs, columns, and curved shapes require different approaches to volume calculation. This guide covers the geometry and practical tips for each shape.

Calculating Concrete for Steps and Stairs

Poured concrete steps are essentially stacked rectangles. Each step adds volume equal to width x run x (cumulative rise). The bottom step carries the full height of all steps above it.

Standard Step Dimensions

Building codes typically require a rise between 7 and 7.75 inches and a run of at least 10 inches. Total stair width should be at least 36 inches for residential applications.
